Andreas Gefeller: Photographs - kelloggchurch.org

Andreas Gefeller. Still Light Clervaux Cité de l’Image, Luxembourg Until September 25, 2020. Gefeller takes photographs of container ports, computer cases or, lastly, plants and bushes. But it is not so much the objects photographed that appear in the bright light in his series Blank, it is rather, on the contrary, the light itself—as photographic material, as pure texture—the light itself that asserts power over the things photographed and brings them to the point of dissolution. German photographer Andreas Gefeller born 1970 creates digital composite photographs that open new perspectives on familiar situations: cherry blossoms appear as a vast cosmos and utility poles are transformed into gorgeous abstractions. Using the camera as a tool of both truth and deception, Andreas Gefeller produces photographs of urban and manmade spaces that challenge the boundaries of everyday perception. His series have grown increasingly abstract. Among his earliest and most straightforward is.

Using the camera as a tool of both truth and deception, Andreas Gefeller produces photographs of urban and manmade spaces that challenge the boundaries of everyday perception. His series have grown increasingly abstract. “In my pictures, human made things and constructions are ethereal and transparent, as if they were fragile like the wings of a butterfly”. With his incredible sense of aesthetic and poetry, and with light almost sacred and spiritual, Gefeller’s photographs may express the end of the world or the world after its end. Sensitizing and expanding our perception of what is allegedly a familiar reality is the attitude Düsseldorf-based photographer Andreas Gefeller 1970 adopts in his work. His most recent photographs are clearly more formal and structural, and they exhibit striking pictorial qualities. ATLAS is delighted to announce that the first UK solo show of Andreas Gefeller’s work will open at the gallery this Spring. The exhibition will showcase Gefeller’s new series of photographs The Back Side of Light alongside works from his earlier series Soma 2002, Supervisions 2008, The Japan Series 2012 and Blank 2012.Tracing Gefeller’s 20-year artistic career up to the present.

Expanding on the series Supervisions, begun in 2002, photo artist Andreas Gefeller 1970 has included new aspects in his original concept. He systematically scans surfaces, most of them in urban space, from a low height by digitally assembling hundreds of individual photographs into. In 1998, at a picnic with a friend who had fallen asleep, Andreas Gefeller felt the urge to photograph the scene from above, “as from a satellite”, and he later glued the pictures together to form an overview. The result reminded him both of the composited pictures of space he had seen as a child and David Hockney’s collages.
